2000 PLEMMONS/PLEMONS FAMILY REUNION REPORT
This years reunion, held in Pell City, AL, was sponsored by John Robert & Reba Plemons and their daughter Malinda Plemons Rush. Francis and Janet Webb arrived from Waynesville, NC a week ahead of time to help get things set up. The activities started Thursday night at the home of John Robert and Reba Plemons where an executive committee of ten assembled. At that time a wide variety of topics were discussed. Some of the topics discussed were past reunions, plans for this years reunion, and plans for next years reunion. Joyce Plemons Reese, being a farmers wife from Illinois, was puzzled to learn that the Government had outlawed rolling hay into round bundles. Of course, Joyce had to ask why this law was passed. She was delighted to find out the reason was to make sure the cows would get a square meal.
The committee decided to try to hold the reunion next year in NC, The sacred ground where our ancestors established a foothold in the USA. Currently there are more than 1700 households bearing the family name scattered throughout the United States and 25% of them reside in NC.
Francis and Janet Webb volunteered to research the availability of a facility large enough to accommodate a fairly large group. Someone advanced a guess that we could expect at least 300 to attend the event since such a large number of family members live in the Asheville and surrounding area. Several family members gave Janet seed money to help cover the initial cost of renting a meeting place. We will publish information about the 2001 reunion in "Branches" as soon as it is developed.
Friday afternoon the early bird crowd gathered on John Robert's pond alongside the Pell City Airport. Fried catfish, hushpuppies, corn on the cob cooked in the shuck on an open grill and the famous Plemons baked beans were in abundance. Gene and Betty Plemon from Rockford, IL prepared and cooked the corn. Wonder if they brought it all the way from Illinois. There also was a plentiful supply of soft drinks and ice tea. John Fredrick picked up a fishing rod and proceeded to catch a catfish from the pond. John Frederick was the only one to cat a fish. A 20 foot diameter gazebo on the edge of the pond was furnished with tables and chairs. Many of the attendees set up chairs on the grass outside the gazebo.
Saturday: The main event was at the Pell City Civic Center. Attendance: 59 people, with 15 different Surnames, from 8 different states (AL, CA, GA, IL, MD, NC, PA, TN):
