SAMUEL PLEMMONS/PLEMONS
:Who was his parents? Some say John and Sarah M. Plemons and others say Thomas and Margaret Plemons. John and Thomas were brothers and the sons of John Plemons 1772 and Cecilia Hailey 1772.From Sherry Allen Brooks to Joe Plemons - 9 Dec 1999
Hi! I know. Everyone says Samuel comes from Thomas and Margaret. Even the Plemons book shows this. But it also states that John and Sarah may have had another son between Soloman and Levi.
I have spoken with another cousin of ours, Burl Plemons, who lives in Arkansas who also has the Plemmons Book. He states that there is a Buncombe County Genealogical Society. They have even stated that there are some errors in the book and honestly do not know where she got the source. I just moved here to NC from Virginia 3 months ago. I do plan on getting in touch with them and seeing what other info I can find.
My direct line is: John, born 1750: John, born 1772 and Cecelia: John born 1805/06 and Sarah: Samuel Plemmons, born 1829 m. Hannah Sumner: Andrew Solomon Plemmons, born September 1857: Clara Silena Plemmons, born 3 April 1880.
Clara was my great grandmother. She did pass down the information to her daughter Girlie Sara Jane Turner-Allen (my grandmother) that we were descended from Samuel and Hannah Plemmons and that Samuel added the second "M" in our line.
I am, of course, still looking for any other evidence, but what I have found so far still leads me to believe that Samuel is the son of John and Sarah. Would love to swap other info or if you find out anything else, please let me know. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Sherri Allen Brooks
From Sherry Marine of Sutter Creek, CA to Joe Plemons - 10 Jan 2000
Hi Joe, It has been a long time since we have spoken and I was thrilled to see in the last Branches newsletter that you have email. How is your research going?
I just wanted to say hello and to thank you again for the wonderful picture of my great-grandparents, John James David Lewis Pierce Plemons and Anna Mae Johnson. That was so very thoughtful of you and I am forever grateful.
I am sending in my dues for the newsletter. Thanks to all who publish it. A wonderful job! Let me know if there is anything I can do to help or contribute. I have had to let my genealogy take a back seat this past year but I am back in the game now.
I hope to hear from you when you have an opportunity.

From Sherri Allen Brooks to Joe Plemons: 16 Dec 1999
Hello. I'm your cousin Sherri Brooks. Remember were discussing that Samuel Plemmons was the son of John Plemons and Sarah Plemons-Gipson instead of Thomas and Margaret.
There was another reason why I believe this that I forgot to mention. After Samuel's death, his second wife Harriet Whisenaut split the family up. Her children by Samuel remained with her. Samuel's children by his wife Hannah Sumner were split up between relatives. Solomon Andrew, my gg grandfather, along with John Henry, William Merkerson, and Dicey went to live with Catherine Garren-Sumner, Hannah's mother. Their sister Sarah Catherine, who is named after each grandmother, went to live with Sarah Plemons-Gipson. This is according to the 1870 Census of Gilmer Co., Ga. Margaret Plemons was still living at the time.
If you have find any other info, please let me know. Looking forward to hearing from you. Sherri Brooks
Hello Joe,
I am interested to know if in your family names you have any Plemon, Plyman, Plyming, or Plymen's from Cornwall or Devon. I have all of the above spelling in my family tree. Most of our christening/marriages were in St Clement, Cornwall, Cuby with Tregony, Cornwall and Stoke Damerel, Devon. Looking forward to hearing from you. CONSTANCE
------------------------------------------------------
Hi Constance:
There are several of us PLEMMONS and PLEMONS that have done considerable research into the family. We have made postive connections between the one "M" and the two "MM" spellings. We have been able to trace them back to North Carolina in the mid 1700s (Burke-Buncombe County area). So far we have not been able to find out positively where the PLEMMONS/PLEMONS came from, or when they arrived in the US. There is speculation that PLEMONS were originally of Flemish origin and when they moved to Ireland they were called FLEMING. Later the name became PLEMONS. I want to emphasize (speculation) since we have no proof. We would like very much to make a determination as to where PLEMONS came from.
There is also a family line PLEMON. According to a book published by one of their family members they are French Canadian. Also according to the book LEVI OLIVER PLEMON was born in Canada and migrated down to New York and on over to Wisconsin. The book also indicates that census records of this LEVI OLIVER PLEMON shows that his father was born in France. We have not been able to connect this PLEMON family to our PLEMMONS/PLEMONS.
I am very interested in exploring the possibility that we might be able to make a connection between our families. You say that you have all of these names in your family = PLEMON, PLYMAN, PLYMING, PLYMEN'S from Cornwall or Devon. When did your family enter the US and where did they settle? How did the name PLEMON come into your line? Was it a variation of one of the others? What time frame in Cornwall or Devon did these names appear? I am full of questions and excited at the potential. How did you become aware of me? JOE

The following story of George Lafayette Plemons family was submitted by William Plemons of Virginia. Bear in mind that the research for this story was conducted over 20 years ago and appears as it was written at that time. Numerous new facts have been uncovered since that time.
GEORGE LAFAYETTE PLEMONS
George Lafayette was born in Gilmer Co., GA on 30 Jan 1861. George was the son of Harriet and Samuel N. Plemons who were born in NC. Samuel was the son of Margaret and Thomas Plemons. Thomas was the son of Cecelia and John Plemons who were born in NC about 1772. Samuel, Thomas and John appeared in the 1850 Gilmer County census along with the names of their children. The maiden names of the wives were not given. Before 1850, the US Census listed only the name of the head of the household with the number of males and females in different age brackets.
Samuel Plemons was listed as a wagon maker. Apparently, he and his first Wife's brother, Solomon Sumner, were in business together. Solomon Sumner married one of Samuel's sisters and owned approximately 320 acres near Ellijay, GA.
Hannah Sumner, daughter of Cathrine and William Sumner of Gilmer Co. and Samuel N. Plemons were married 22 Apr 1849. Hannah was 20 and Samuel was 19. They had 5 children who were: John Henry, Dicey, William Merkerson (Murk), Sarah Cathrine, and Solomon Andrew.
Sometime before 1860 Hannah died and Samuel married Harriet (probably the daughter of G.W. Elliott). Harriet
Was 19 in 1850. They had 5 children who were: Martha J., George Lafayette, Savannah (or Susannah) M., Jelina E., and Caroline.
It can be assumed that Samuel and Thomas died before 1870 as they are not listed in the 1870 census. Harriet and Caroline are listed in 1870 living with Margaret. The 1870 census did not list the 3 women.
John Henry, William Merkerson, Solomon Andrew, and Dicey are listed in the 1870 Gilmer County census living with Catharine Sumner who is 78 years old.
Martha J., Savannah M., and Jelina E. are listed in the 1870 census with G. W. Elliott.
In 1870, Sarah Catharine was listed with Sarah M. Gipson who was 63. Sarah Gipson was first married to a Plemons (first name unknown) who was the brother of Thomas.
George Lafayette was 9 years old in 1870 and living with George Whisenant who was 59. George Lafayette does not show up in a later census, so do not know where he lived or much about him until his third marriage. All of the 1890 census records were destroyed by a fire, and these records are needed to show his first two marriages. None of his 1979 descendants have any information.
George Lafayette married __________Whisenant about 1881 and had 4 children: William Caldwell, Christopher Columbus, George Henry and Charity. His second wife was ___________Whisenant, a sister of his first wife. They did not have any children as she died within the first year of marriage.
On Feb 5, 1893, George Lafayette married Martha Josephine Brooks of Bradley Co., TN. They had 4 children: Callie, Murphy F., Floyd Monroe and Jake L.
Martha Josephine Brooks was born April 19, 1860, in Gilmer Co., GA. Her parents were Mary Synthia Weaver and William Brooks who was a carpenter.
William Brooks was assumed drowned in the Conasauga River on the way to work as his capsized boat was found but not his body. This was a few months before Martha Josephine was born. Martha's mother died when she was about 3 years old. She was taken to Bradley Co., TN and raised by Weaver relatives.
The 1860 Gilmer Co., Census showed Cindy and Martha, who was one month old, living with Cindy's mother Martha C. Weaver who was a widow. There were 3 boys and a girl in their5 teens living with her. She and Cindy were listed as washer-women. The Weavers were born in SC.
George and Martha and his 4 children settled in a two story house on approximately 200 acres in Catoosa County, GA about 3 miles north of Ringgold with US 41 dividing the property. Their 4 children were born there.
Sometime around 1928 George and Martha moved to Ringgold where they lived until they died. George died Apr 25, 1931 and Martha died Oct 5, 1931. They both are buried in Anderson Cemetery, in Ringgold, GA. They both were members of the First Baptist Church of Ringgold. George was a deacon.
Catoosa Baptist Tabernacle is on part of the property once owned by George Lafayette. In 1978, across the highway from Catoosa Baptist Tabernacle, Plemons Estate was developed on approximately 99 acres.
