LETTERS / QUERIES
Hi Bill, - Thanks for supplying me with the 5 August 2000 wedding information of your granddaughter DEANNE PLEMMONS and LANCE FARRIS. We will run an announcement in the March edition of "Branches".
Also many thanks for the $25.00 check you included in support of our family newsletter "Branches". Warren and I appreciate the financial assistance.
I just noticed that I do not have Lance and Deanne Farris on the mailing list for "Branches". Give me their address and I will add it.
Also can you send me a printout of your children and grandchildren so I can check to make sure I have your family listed correctly? - Joe

C. BUFORD PLEMMONS
sends this in: (Does anyone connect to this family?)My family and I have really enjoyed your "BRANCHES". My father was DAVID WESLEY PLEMMONS 1899-1982 born in OK, Indian Territory. My Grandfather was JOE WESLEY PLEMMONS. I am told Granddad's family came from near Johnson City, TN to near Marlow, OK.
My two sons Duane Stacy Plemmons (now living in Singapore with Hewlett-Packard) and Kerry Buford Plemmons of Littleton, CO are very interested in family history. I never knew of any of my Grandad's family.
(Thanks Buford, for the letter and the generous donation to help us defray the cost of "BRANCHES". Warren and Joe)
-------------------------------------
The Joe Wesley Plemmons that he is talking about is the brother of my great great grand mother Martha Maranda Plemmons. Joe and Martha's parents were William Alexander Plemmons and Cynthia Leumena Axley. If he wants to contact me, I will share what information that I have on this family. I even have a photo of William Alexander Plemmons and Cynthia taken about a month before she past away. And I have his death certificate and her obituary.

Joe, Received the newsletter (12/2000) just an hour ago. My name is Doctor Handy Plemmons everyone calls me "Doc". I live in Cedarville, Ohio and my address is 2520 Harbison Rd. I remember getting a copy of you previous newsletter, but was unsure of the validly of it. There are so many scam artists now days. I now believe that this is a true endeavor by caring people wanting to share and learn more of their family heritage from other members of the family. I will assemble the information that I have and send it on to you. It will be interesting to see how my piece of the family puzzle fits with others. I will also send a monitory contribution to help keep this going. My e-mail address is doc@plemmons.com should you need to reach me. I will be in touch. Doc Plemmons
-----------------------------------
Doc, I am delighted to make contact with you and will be eagerly waiting to get info on your family line. The many scams out there have troubled me for some time. They serve to degrade those of us that are truly trying to piece our family together and are not looking for any monetary gain from it. There are several of us that have gathered together a huge amount of information on the family and are more than willing to share with others.
If you have any old identifiable pictures of the clan we would love to have copies that we can put in our library for consideration to be published in "Branches". And let me thank you ahead of time for your offer to help us out financially.
Don't hesitate to send any current family happenings for inclusion in "Branches".
Please contact me at Joe Plemons 403 Blair Rd Indian Head, MD 20640.

Hello Joe: Well, it's getting to be that time of year again, and I think I want to send some money for the upkeep, and maintenance of the Branches Newsletter. My problem is that I forget who I should send it to - You or Warren. Perhaps you can help me out and tell me where to go - ha, ha. Hope you all are fine and in good health, and ready for the holiday season, and the New Year. I recently heard from Janet Webb, advising that her new book will be published early next year, and I have sent in my order already. Can't wait to read about all of us Plemmons/Plemons folks. I have some pictures of my Grandfather and Grandmother Plemmons. If you are interested, I'll send them along for a future edition of Branches. Take good care of yourself, and keep a good thought. Bruce Plemmons Westland, MI
----------------------------------
Hi Bruce, Good to hear from you again. Thanks for your offer to continue providing financial help for the upkeep and maintenance of the Branches Newsletters. I will make a notation of it in the record and then forward it on to Warren.
You can also send me any Information you become aware of concerning the current events of our various family lines to me. Births, Marriages, School graduations, Special accomplishments, Military service and Deaths just to mention a few. I will forward copies on to Warren and Janet. Don't forget to provide us with identification or stories surrounding pictures you send for Warren to use in the newsletter. Joe Plemons 403 Blair Rd Indian Head, MD 20640 (301) 743-5937

My father believes that we are Welch descendants... The name Plemons translates to the old "PLOWMAN" which suggests that our forefathers would have been farmers. Dad has a lot of history in his tellings but I have no verifiable proof. For example Dad remembers, as does my grandmother Sarah, that Charlie Plemons' nickname was "dog". In his memories Charlie married Alma Tuck and "someone" Dischner. Just a point to ponder . Regards BAX PLEMONS

Received check for $10.00 from Wanda Harris. Here is copy of letter I sent her.
19 December, 2000 Hi Wanda, Yes, I remember who you are. You and your cousin Lynn Jordan came down from Nashville to the reunion in Hartselle. I am pleased to hear that you enjoy reading the newsletter. We are constantly on the lookout for family related information. Should you become aware of family events such as births, marriages, deaths, school graduation, military service, special accomplishment or any newsworthy item that we could publish send it to me and I will send in on to Warren to be included in "Branches". If I am not mistaken the Clara Plemons that married ______ HARRIS is your line. Can you furnish me with the names of the children of Clara?
Thanks for your donation to help with the cost of publishing and distributing "Branches". Warren and I appreciate all the help we can get. Do you have email? mine is <joeplemons@aol.com> - Joe
-------------------------------------------
Dear Warren - We really enjoy the newsletter. We do want to continue receiving it. We missed the last year's reunion, but are planning and hoping to be there this year.
My Mother, Opal Plemons Howard, is a resident of Summerfords Nursing Home. She was 86 years old on July 3, 2000. I take the newsletter and read it to her. She enjoys it, too. Her eyesight is bad now and therefore she cant read anymore.
I am enclosing a small check to help with cost. Thank you so much and hope you can keep up the good work. Sincerely, Margean Puckett, Hartselle, Alabama.

Upon proofreading this newsletter, I noticed that several letters mention "checks", "donations", etc. Keep in mind that we are NOT in this as a business, and certainly DO NOT make a profit. However, we appreciate any and all help. And - information is just as valuable, if not more so, than money. - Warren
The following are email messages from the Internet. I had not heard from my 1st cousin, Jim Pardue, since about 1960. We were close friends as well as relatives. The events of life caused each to go separate ways. This is how we met again through "Branches" and the Internet after forty-one years! - Warren
Joe, I saw your messages on a site about the Plemons family. Are they the Plemons family of East Tennessee that are related to the family of James W. and Margaret L. Pardue of Sweetwater ? If they are I would like to hear any info you might have. Thanks a lot. Ann Pardue
=================
Warren - Do you know which James W this is? - Joe Plemons
=================
Hi Warren, I have been talking with a guy named Joe Plemons. He gave me your email address. The family was not in his line. I was asking him if he had any info about the Pardue family that lived in Sweetwater, Tennessee. James W. Pardue married Margaret L. Burn and I think he had a daughter that married a Plemons man named Walter. If you have any info about this family it would be appreciated. Thanks a lot! Ann Pardue
=================
Hi Ann. I am the grandson of James Washington Pardue and Margaret Louise Burn Pardue. If you are interested in gathering information about the Burn or Pardue lines, I will be glad to give you anything that I have on them. Warren Plemons
=================
Hi Warren, That would be great.... My husband is a Pardue and everything I have seen has been confusing. I have a paper that his Aunt Alice wrote years ago and it gives his great-grandfathers name as James. Everybody else has said it was Lilliston Adams Pardue. If you could either email me some info or mail it or if there was a web site with some info on it that would be great. Thanks for your help! - Ann
=================
Hello Ann: I hope that you received the email that I sent answering your earlier message to Joe. (Joe and I are distant kin.) Margaret Elizabeth Pardue married Walter Benjamin Plemons. This is my mother and father.
I have a layout of the Pardue family tree that was done (not by me) some years ago. I can send a picture of it if you are interested. What family lines are you researching? My sister had started working on the Pardue and Burn lines (maternal) while I was doing the Plemons, Hooker lines (paternal). I have been trying to post them to a "Family Tree Works" program. I am always interested in gathering more information. Warren Plemons
=================
Hello again Ann, - When I began getting interested in genealogy many years ago, I told my Mother what I was going to do and she said, "Oh, don't even try to research the Pardue line. My Grandfather was married either two or three times and had twenty-six children. You'll never find out all their information."
I was ready to take her word and drop that line, but several months later she handed me a sheet of paper which had the picture drawing shown here on it. Someone in the Pardue line had been doing the research for some time and had given it out to anyone interested. Sadly, this is about the limit of what I have on the Pardues. My Sister Martha Peterman was willing to start researching the Burn/Pardue side of the family while I would tackle the Plemons/Hooker lines.
Research on the Plemons family started to take on a life of its own. As I progressed, I ran into others who were trying to piece together various fragments of Plemons/Plemmons families. Since Plemons is a fairly unusual name, I thought that I could join in.
The Burn/Burns line and the Pardue/Perdue lines would be more trouble, so I was glad to hand that job off to Martha. Unfortunately, she has had a lot of sickness/accidents in her family and has not had a lot of time to devote to the study. She takes care of the Heritage Museum in Sweetwater and that takes any spare time that she has.
Please - can you give me any information on your family members - names, birth dates, etc.? I will post the information on the web site that my nephew Mike Plemons hosts. Most of it is there already, but not very much of the latter day families. Let me know if you are interested and I will send the web address of Mike's home page. It is mostly Plemons, but the Pardues are there, too.
Good luck and please let me know any family information that you care to share. Also, I have pictures of James Washington Pardue and Margaret Louise Burn Pardue. My mother was named after her, Margaret Elizabeth Pardue Plemons. Warren Plemons
===================
Hi Warren, Thanks for sending the picture, but I already have an exact copy sent to me by my husbands sister "Dot". I actually think you and my husband are cousins. My husband is James R. Pardue son of the late Robert Lilliston Pardue and of the late Emma B. Barnett of Athens, TN. I think your Mother is Margaret "Maggie" Plemons was Robert "Bob" Pardues Sister, am I correct? I am really not very familiar with all of the family even though Jim and I have 2 handsome little boys and have been together for almost seventeen years. The reason I started trying to find out about the ancestors of the family is I want my boys to know from where and who they came. Well part of it any way some things in a persons past is
best left in the past to avoid any hardship to others who might not know about certain details of ones past...Well I guess I have rambled enough if you would please send me that web address I would like to take a look at it. Thank a lot. Ann Pardue
=====================
Hello Ann, - I was pretty surprised to find out who you are. I had lost track of Jim and had given up trying to locate him some year's back. Jim and I used to run around together and even double dated together in our younger days. (I was born in '37 and he was born in '39.) Our families visited often and only grew apart when the Pardues moved to Athens. We visited some after they moved but not as much as before. I would see Bobbie June (Jim's sister) occasionally more than any of the others. Dot worked with my Mother at a family owned ice cream store (Kream Kup) in Sweetwater, but I eventually lost track of everyone. I guess what happened is that everyone who wanted to visit started dying. The younger crowd is too busy with life to care about seeing how old friends and family is getting along. I would hear about them sometimes, but my life took me to others things also.
I went to work at Bowater Paper Company in the same department where Jim worked at about the time that he left. And I guess that was about the last time that I saw Jim. That was 1960. I asked about him at Uncle Bob's funeral and somebody (I don't know who) said, "We don't know where he is now." I took it that there was some family troubles and didn't inquire further.
My Dad died in 1956. I married in 1964 and moved to Cleveland. I continued to work at Bowater and retired in 1996 after 36 years. Aunt Emma was dead and buried before I knew it, the same year that I retired. I liked her. She was always good to me when my sister, Mildred, and I would spend the day at their house when I was little. She was a good cook and I remember eating homemade ice cream on the back porch steps. I remember that, once, Jimmy and I were in Dad's car and I was going to show him that I could reach the peddles. I slid down under the steering wheel and pushed in the clutch. The car started rolling down the hill. That caused a little excitement and got us run out of the car.
I look back on those days as pretty happy times. It was during W.W.II and things were scarce. You didn't visit much because there was no gasoline to waste. Uncle Bob was on the city police force in Sweetwater and later became a deputy sheriff in Madisonville. When the election changed, he went to the Athens Police Force and stayed there for many years.
Uncle Bob was number seven of ten children. He was ten years younger than my mother was. I used to like to hear the stories that he would tell about his time on the police force. He had some wild experiences. Once, when he was deputy sheriff, he asked my brother, who was commander of the local National Guard unit, to go with them on a raid to catch some fellow at his home up in the mountains. They took along some flares that they intended to shoot up in the air to light the place up while everyone captured the "bad guy". To make a long story short, when the flares went up, they came back down and set fire to the woods. The deputies spent the rest of the night fighting the woods fire and the "bad guy" got away.
Ann, I would like to know about Jim and what all has happened since I saw him last. I always thought of him as my friend as well as a relative. I am glad to hear that he met someone and had a good life later. I would like to meet the boys someday.
I was telling you about the web site that is maintained by Mike Plemons, who is my brother Hal's son. I just took a look at it and found that he is missing a lot of information about the Pardues. I can send you the brothers and sisters Uncle Bob and as much about Jim's sisters and who they married as I have. But, I am sad to say, I don't have a lot more than that. To see some of the info, check the following site: <http://personal.lig.bellsouth.net/lig/m/p/mpplem/PlemonsG/P4.htm>
Most of the time, people think that you are prying when you ask for information about their immediate family. The information doesn't seem important to anyone now, but years from now it will be. I wish that I could ask questions about my family but there is almost no one left to answer. And, I didn't ever think that I would be interested in this kind of stuff until I started to look around and realize that I didn't know that much about who I am or where I came from.
I have been able to trace back through nine generations of Plemons, and I also have found that there is a lot more of us than I ever imagined. The Pardues could be traced back even farther, I am sure, but there are a lot more of them, also.
Please write back soon and let me know anything that I can tell you about the Pardues that you would like to ask. I am glad to be able to share information with you. And, if you will, would you care to tell me your boys' names, birth dates, etc. And information about you would be appreciated, too.
When I retired, the wife and I built on the lower edge of Athens and have lived here about five years now. I have one son, Tim, who lives not too far away in Charleston, and two grandchildren. Will is in the first grade at Charleston School and Jake is in the fourth grade at the same school. Jake is quiet and studious and Will is tough as a pine knot - into something all the time. I had cardiac by-pass surgery soon after I retired and live a very quiet life now. We don't stray too far from home.
I didn't mean to write a book when I started this. Just started to write on a Sunday afternoon and got carried away. I was very glad to hear from you and I hope that we can keep in touch now. Tell the boys that they have relatives all over McMinn and Monroe Counties. Warren
=======================
Hello Warren- To say it's been a long time, I guess is a sizeable understatement. But I'm glad to hear from you, and to know that you and all of yours are well and happy.
Ann got interested in this family tree thing after I was browsing the web one day and saw an inquiry from a woman by the name of Brenda Hartman, who lives near Raleigh, N.C. (I think). She had asked for any information on some Pardue (?) who had my dad's middle name, so I got back to her, and she has collected more information about the Pardue Family than I'd ever seen before. We wrote back & forth a few times. Anyway, my first wife and I divorced about a year after our boy was born. She died in 1985, and Tony was killed in an auto accident in April, 1986. In all the time it's been, I moved around quite a bit. I never wanted to stay anywhere for any length of time. I guess it was just me.
I think the last time I saw you was at Ft. Stewart, Ga. Or, that's about the last time I remember. I remember Hal was there too, and that's about the last I saw of him until Dad's funeral. He, Pete, I think Martha, and maybe Edna came, but I don't remember seeing you.
Being a bachelor, I traveled nationwide for several years as an independent contractor for a host of Vending Machine companies. I enjoyed that a lot. I'd heard my dad talk about the redwoods in California when I was growing up, and I made a point of going to some of the same places he'd been.
A friend of mine and I started a Game Room (Video) in a newly constructed shopping center in Dayton, TN in the fall of 1984. It was really a roaring success. Sometimes, on the weekend, there'd hardly be standing room. He owned a restaurant in Athens, and I took care of the game room. Anyway, I needed some help, so I hired a beautiful young lady by the name of Margaret Ann Pelfrey. I don't know if it was, as they say, "love at first sight" or not, but we were married a very short time later on my birthday in 1984, and everything has just been beautiful every since.
We stayed in the game room business a while, then we traveled some doing contract work again, then I started a Tire shop in Cleveland. We were there for about 5 years, then I sold out and we moved down on the Gulf coast, to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. We liked it there, but I couldn't stand the heat in summer, so we came back to Tennessee, where it at least cooled-off at night. We landed in Cleveland, where Ann attended Cleveland State. Then we bought a house here at Lake Tansi in Crossville in April 1998.
In the meantime, our first son James Reed 2nd. (NOT Jr.) was born on May 15, 1992. He was born about 4 oclock in the afternoon. Later on, about 7-8 p.m., I was walking down the hallway to the nursery to see him and one of the nurses (knowing who I was) asked me if I was restless. And just off the top of my head, I said, "No, I was just going down here to see my "little Bear". That stuck, and he's been "Bear" every since.
Our second little boy, Robert Nickolas, was born here in Crossville on May 7, 1998; one week from "Bear's" birthday. With his blonde hair and blue eyes, he's the prettiest little boy I've ever seen. It's really odd to see a picture of "Bear" at the same age that "Nick" is now. It is almost impossible for even me to tell which one is which.
Well Warren, I didn't intend to write a book either, but I just got started and couldn't stop either. It has been a real long time, and I'm glad to know how and where you are now. It's good to hear from you. I'm going to stop writing now, and look forward to hearing from you again. Best wishes, Jim
=====================================
Dear Joe,
I hope "Branches" can keep being published. I really enjoy reading it. I wasn't sure where to send a donation so I hope you can direct this to the correct place. GAIL PLEMONS
Thanks Gail, for the generous donation to help keep us afloat. I will see to it that Warren gets it
. JOE------------------------------------------
Ruth Plemons called to tell me of a letter that she had received from Wanda Plemons, of Etowah, Tennessee. The following letter caused quite a bit of excitement. I received my copy of the letter the following day.
Dear Warren: Hi, I'm Wanda and I'm married to Jerry Plemons of Etowah, Tennessee. I received the winter issue of "Branches". I enjoyed it very much. It got me to thinking. I was at a yard sale last year. This lady had two old picture albums and some odd old pictures. I asked about them and she said they were Plemons. I thought Jerry might know them so I bought them. We didn't know anyone.
I know they do back to the early 1900s; maybe earlier than that. In one picture, there is an American Flag in it and it has 46 stars. That had to be before 1912, I think.
I've made a list of the names off the pictures, I've enclosed, and on a couple of the pictures have Clark & Taylor - Whitewright, Texas stamped on the matting and Stanfield, Cleveland, Tennessee. One picture has Mountain, Tennessee written on it.
I noticed in "Branches" that some of the Plemons were from Texas. I would like to find these people a home with their kinfolk. I'll be looking for the next "Branches". Wanda Plemons, Etowah, Tennessee.
P.S. I sent Ruth Plemons and Janet Webb a copy of this letter.
Included with the above letter was a list of 38 pictures, including W. C. Plemons & Mary Ann Duckett Plemons; Henry Plemons; Columbus Parks & Laura Plemons Parks; and many members of the Meece, Frady, Conner, Everett, & Clark families. These pictures were old, old, but were in very good condition.
Ruth had called Wanda and made arrangements to go to Etowah the next week and pick up the pictures. I called Wanda to see if I could come sooner and then called Ruth to let her know what I was planning.
I met Jerry for the first time, but Wanda had gone shopping and wouldn't return until later. Jerry confirmed that Wanda was only interested in seeing that the pictures got into the hands of some of the family members shown.
I cataloged and copied the pictures to computer and sent a sample to Joe Plemons & Janet Webb. Both were very eager to see them and immediately made a connection to living family members. Joe got in touch with Buel Hobert Plemons, who lives near Ellijay, Georgia, to tell him that pictures of his Grandfather and Grandmother had been found. Buel called by phone to ask if I could send a couple of the pictures over the Internet to verify that they were, indeed, his family. He was delighted to know that they had surfaced.
Plans now include passing them to Joe Plemons, who will hand-carry them to Buel. I have made copies and will be showing you some of them on the Internet and in coming issues of Branches. Also, some plans are in the works to compensate and show thanks to Wanda and Jerry for their generosity and thoughtfulness.
And now - all of this has brought up a thought! What will happen to MY family pictures someday? Who can identify them? When my Grandmother, Martha Jane Hooker Plemons, died, the house was cleaned, and most possessions, including the photo albums, family Bible, quilts, dishes and even some furniture were used to fill an old cistern on the back porch. I'm sure the thought was "Who would ever want such trash?" - Warren
