LETTERS / QUERIES
JOE, Calvin Dorris gave me your e-mail address saying you might be able to help me clear up some questions I have on the Plemmons family. I have run across conflicting information on Peter Plemmons and John Plemmons.
Some records I have run across indicate that they were both married to Jane Pritchard. Could you tell me which is correct and who their children were. I also have some indications that both John Plemmons and Jane died in Gilmer, Ga. Other information says that they died in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Leander Sluder was married to a Mahilda in the 1840 census of Buncombe Co. N.C. They moved to Gilmer, Ga. by 1850. Some of the researchers feel that Mahilda was a Plemmons. Any help that you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Jean
Hello Jean - My research has concentrated mostly on the line of John Plemons born 1772 that married Cecilia Hailey born 1772 and migrated with their family from Buncombe Co, NC to Gilmer County, GA late 1837 or early 1838 according to date of birth of children and grandchildren. Since Jacob Plemons that married Nancy Hipps also migrated to Gilmer, Co GA. I found it necessary to compiled a lot of information on that family line just to sort out who belongs to John and who belongs to Jacob. Jacob went from Buncombe Co., NC to Macon Co., NC then to Gilmer Co., GA. in the early 1840's Jacob fits as a son of Thomas Plemons, 1760, and Elizabeth Roberts. Calvin Dorris is of the Thomas Plemons 1760 line. I am of the John Plemons 1772 line. I am forwarding your query to be included in the Plemmons/Plemons newsletter to see if we get any response from it. I am also forwarding it on to Janet Webb of Waynesville, NC for her comments. She is much more versed on the earlier Plemmons of NC than I am. There was a Jane Plemons living with William and Susan Carroll in 1850 and 1860 in Gilmer Co., GA. This Jane was born about 1759 in VA. A book I picked up at the Gilmer Co. Library written on the Carroll family listed Susan as having the maiden name of Plemons and being the daughter of the Jane Plemons that lived with them, but it didn't list who the husband of Jane was. William Plemons a son of John and Cecilia Plemons married Mary Ann Carrolla daughter of William and Susan Carroll. JOE

Dear Friend, - I would like to personally invite you to the Plemons/Plemmons roots reunion to be hold In Asheville this coming summer (See letter in Reunion Information for details). It will be a unique opportunity to fellowship and share in our common heritage, to make now friends and share experiences and information.
Janet Webb, who just recently published a now book on the Plemons/Plemmons clan, will be co-host of the event along with myself. She has documented several generations of Plemons who originally settled in Buncombe County in the early 1800's and whose heirs have since scattered through out the United States. You may contact her at (828) 4569733 to reserve a copy. She may have some copies available at the reunion. The cost of the book is $30.00. You will find it a valuable tool in tracing you ancestors.
Many of us spend a lifetime wondering who our direct descendants were. This may be the opportunity of a lifetime to make that connection. I, personally, was very excited when I was accepted as a member in the S.A.R. (Sons of the American Revolution) after I was able to prove that my Great-great-great-great-grand father Peter Plemons fought in the American Revolution and was also excited that my great grandfather James E. Plemmons fought in the Civil War and was able to obtain several documents that showed proof of this.
Please make note of the important event on your calendar and make plans to join us.
Please spread the word about the reunion and let Francis and Janet Webb or myself know if you plan to attend by June 1, 2001.
Sincerely, Roy A. Plemmons, 35 Powell St., Asheville, NC 28806, (828) 232-0498

When still a young man, Uncle Harvey was told he would live a long life by adding a little gunpowder to his breakfast every morning. So every morning for the rest of his life he sprinkled some gunpowder on his morning eggs or corn flakes. The formula seems to have worked as Uncle Harvey lived to be 106 years old.
At his death he left four children, 26 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren, and a 15-foot hole in the wall of the crematorium. Joe Plemons

Hi Joe, My name is ALICIA PLEMMONS TURLEY. I found some information that I want to ask you about concerning spring of 1999 issue of Branches I found on the Internet. In there you have mentioned BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PLEMONS married MAGGIE HILL and they had 6 children. One of the children mentioned is my grandfather his name as you have it is JAMES WILLIAM. I have never heard that before because we know him as WILLIAM HENRY so I got to doing some talking to family members and his sister ELLA MAE, her daughter I have been talking to a lot does not ever remember his name as having the JAMES on it. Could you please tell me how you found this information so I can research it more cause we are all now thinking he must have dropped it years and years ago. Thank you so much for your time.

Hi Alicia, Good to hear from you. Several years back MARY PLEMONS WINK and I made a visit to Rome, GA and while there we had a very nice visit with DESSIE ANN GORE PLEMONS. Dessie was the wife of VARNELL FRANKLIN PLEMONS. Varnell was a grandson of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PLEMONS and LAURA SMITH, the first wife of Benjamin. Dessie had all this information written down and let us copy it. Dessie died 10 May 1996 shortly after Mary and I visited with her. Could Dessie have made a mistake in recording this information? Could your grandfather's name have been James William Henry Plemons? I do not have any information on your grandfather other than he was born 1909. The 1910 census just shows him as William age 1. I would love to be able to correct the information I have and fill in the missing information. Can you help out with this? Who did James William (Henry) marry? What were the names of his children? When and where did he die? Dessie also commented that Maggie Hill was a beautiful Indian girl.

Morning Warren,
Just thought I would send you a note to say hello. I got a copy of Branches last fall and my daughter got a copy the same month. She called me excited about her family she knew so little about. Hope you are enjoying retirement and life to the fullest. Talk to you later. Clif
Side note from Warren
: Clif is the son of Pless Clifford Plemons, gson of Jake Plemons, Ggson of Thomas Jacob Plemons. I worked with him for many years at Bowater Paper Company, in Calhoun, Tennessee. When I was first married and moved to Cleveland, Tennessee (near the paper mill), Clifs dad saw my name listed in the phone book and called me to talk about how we were related. I remember that I was just coming home from working a night shift and really was more interested in getting into bed than talking relations, so I dont remember much of what was said. Many years later, after I had become interested in where the family started and how we were related, I saw Clif at work and asked if he would ask his dad if I could come down sometime and talk about the family. Clif told me that it wouldnt do any good; his Dad was having trouble with Alzheimers and wouldnt know me. That hit me pretty hard. Ill always regret not taking more time to get to know Pless better. I missed my chance. Take note of the folks around you, and please dont miss yours!!
Hello Joe and Warren,
Thanks for printing my letter I will be in contact with Helen Parker of Springtown, Texas to find out more about my side of the Plemmons.
I must add a correction to my letter or lose my good daughter though.
Daughter Rita Ann Plemmons Bee threatened to disown me when I only named our two sons and left her off. So help me by getting her on my family name too. Thanks so much we all enjoy you efforts. I would like some day to attend one of the Plemmons reunions. As I am sure you know there are not many Plemmons out this way. I was contacted several years ago by a Plemmons from Denver. But have not heard from him since. Also I came across a John Plemmons in Wichita Falls Texas. He passed away before I could get in contact with him. His nice wife sent me some of his family history.
I spent all of my navy days in Tennessee, Virginia and the New England states until I went overseas.
Thanks again Cousins Joe and Warren - Buford Plemmons

- April 6, 2001 REF. Info on the Plemons family in the Texas PanhandleDear Warren, - I am enclosing some information on the influence of Judge William Buford Plemons in The Texas Panhandle Area, particularly in the town of Amarillo. I had previously sent you some information of the Town of Plemons, which was originally the county seat of Hutchinson County Texas. Very little remains of the town except for the Cemetery and the Plemons Bridge over the Canadian River.
I have enclosed a picture of the Museum in Stinnett Texas which has several written articles on the town and a history of the area. Also a recent opening of a retirement center named for the Judge is enclosed. A street in Stinnett has been named after the Judge. Just some more information for your many files on the Plemons family.
I also recommend the reading of the book "Cowboy Justice". This book is the life of the first Sheriff of Potter County (Amarillo is the county seat of Potter County). Jim Gober (the first Sheriff) married Belle Helen Plemons the daughter of Judge Plemons and was subsequently murdered in Texas. The book is available through the Texas Tech University Press in Lubbock Texas. Very truly yours, Bob Plemons (Great grandson of Pegleg Joe Plemons)

From CLAUDE WESTERFIELD:
MARY A. PLEMONS WALTER
(daughter of JOSEPH TUMMELSTON PLEMMONS and DICEY KATHERINE CHASTAIN) was my grandmother. She died when I was in basic training in San Antonio. She was one of the sweetest persons that ever lived. The house on the farm burned around 1945 or so. I was small. There was a big round rock at the back door where the cream separator was located. Uncle JESS who did not marry until he was 43 used to milk the cows and squirt the milk in my face. I still feel the warm liquid as it splashed on my face. ROBERT and his dad and mother as well as JESS, MARTHA and others are buried in Crawford, TX. Not far from the graveyard is the Shilo Baptist Churchwhich the PLEMONS helped form. There are many PLEMONS that are members of the church yet. The WESTERFIELDs that are members of the church are related to the PLEMONS. Their name was originally WESTERFELD and came from Germany around 1850.

Varnell was a grandson of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PLEMONS and LAURA SMITH, the first wife of Benjamin. Dessie had all this information written down and let us copy it. Dessie died 10 May 1996 shortly after Mary and I visited with her. It appears there was a mistake in recording the name of your grandfather. His original application for a
social security card dated 30 Nov 1936 shows him as WILLIAM HENRY PLEMONS born 2 May 1909 in Rome, GA the son of BENJAMIN PLEMONS and MAGGIE HILL. It also shows him living at 8 Moore Street Rome, GA and working at Anchor Duck Mills. The 1910 census shows him as William age 1. Dessie also commented that Maggie Hill was a beautiful Indian girl. Here is what I have recorded for the family: WILLIAM HENRY PLEMONS SSAN 255-10-2176 born Rome, GA 2 May 1909, died in Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA 8 Jan 1978. Married (family bible) 3 Mar 1928 WILLIE MOZELLE TURNER SSAN 255-10-2176 born 20 Apr 1910, died 3 Sep 1972. Both are buried Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fairview, GA.

Hi Joe: Yes, I am that CAPT, USMC, DONNA LEE PLEMONS! My folks live in Newport, Tennessee now. It's funny that you wrote, I was looking at some Plemons information on the Internet the other day. Congratulations on your
retirement. I've had about 7 years now, and it's almost enough if you know what I mean! I would love to see the newsletters. Best of luck to your grandson. Pass my info to him as well if you get a chance. Regards, Donna

Joe: I am in the Navy. I am an E-3 and a dental tech. I am in Okinawa, Japan. I am 20 years old. I was born in Red Bluff, California. My dad was a PLEMONS. My dad died when I was 9. He had cancer, but died of a heart
attack. His name was LAWRENCE EUGENE PLEMONS. I did not know my grandparents; they died before I was born. We have a lot of family in Tennessee. I have not met very many of them, but my dad told me I was related to Dolly Parton, if that helps you at all. There were 11 kids in my dads' family. One boy died when he was just a baby, so that left 5 girls and 5 boys. All the boys have past away and all of the girls are still living. I don't remember all of their names, because I was so
young when I met them or I didn't meet them at all. The only brother I remember is LARRY. The girls are EVIE GUESS, BUELA, LEE and I don't remember the other two.
Well I have to get back to work. I hope this is good enough, I'm sorry I didn't know too much. Write me back soon and let me know if we are related. Love, AMY

Well SGTMAJ: I come from central Florida. I really don't know much about my Plemons Ancestors. (Isn't that sad?) My aunt does, I believe she does research in this, so I will forward this to her as soon as I find out her email address and she should be getting back to you soon. I will not be able to reply to you for awhile I have to head back to the states for a funeral but when I return to Japan I will drop you a line. Grand Dad was JOHN PICK PLEMONS. He recently past away, about a month ago. LCpl JASON PLEMONS
Note from Joe: John Pick Plemons is John Pickens Plemons that married Betty Green and had children Hugh Edward, John Green, Nancy Kate and Margaret Sue

I am originally from Dallas, Texas. That is where I was born and raised. I am in the military now stationed in Japan. I would like to know more. SSGT JOHNNY DALE PLEMONS
