Since Florida is holding the national news, I thought I would follow their lead. Here is a group of Monroe County Tennessee folks that went to Lake Wales during the land boom in the 1920s seeking their fortune. Most came back with less money than they left with.
Seated on the left is Hugh (Cuby) Blanton, who married Julia Plemons. The young boy with the dog is Hollister (first name unknown). Standing behind the boy is Everett Mitchell, from Tellico Plains, TN. Beside him, the man with no hat is unknown. But the man in the cap looking over the shoulder of the man in front of him is Walter Plemons, my Father. The next man is unknown. Next is Robert L. Pardue, Uncle on my Mother's side. Next man unknown. Then Dewey Pardue, brother to Robert L. Pardue. Next is Everett Mitchell's son, name unknown. Next man unknown. Next is Woodrow Blanton, standing beside his Father Bob Blanton, who married Ida Pardue. You can tell that the Plemons/Blanton/Pardue familys were very close.
When the money ran out, my family lived in a tent near Sarasota while my Dad worked out funds to get my Mother, brother Jack, and sister Edna back home. The trip was something that the family talked about for years afterward - flat tires and more flat tires. - Warren Plemons
