By William Harvey Plemmons - Guntersville, Ala May 30, 2003.

Francis Marion Plemmons Sr. /3/ was the son of John Plemons Sr/2/ and grandson of Thomas Plemin Sr./I/, our Plemin/Plemons/Plemmons patriarch. Francis was born c. 1799 in the Morgan District of Burke Co., NC. and his death was c. 1809 in Apple Grove, Morgan Co., Ala. He married in 1834, Louisa (no maiden name shown) in Burke County, the place of his and her birth, at age 35. Francis died c. 1849 at age 50 and Louisa at age 66 in 1875. Their place of burial is not known, but as they were known to have lived earlier in Sweetwater, Tennessee, it is there burial was thought to have been.

Connecting Francis Marion with his father, John and his grandfather Patriarch Thomas Plemin Sr. was not easy. In a letter dated Feb. 27, 1962, from Francis Marion Plemmons 3rd, son of John Jeams Plemmons and grandson of Francis Marion Plemmons Jr., to Martha Joyce Plemmons Reese, stating that he Francis Marion Plemmons 3d. was named from his Grandfather, Francis Marion Plemmons Jr. and that Francis Jr. was son of Francis Marion Plemmons Sr. To identify Martha Joyce, she is the only daughter of John Pink Plemmons and granddaughter of John James Plemmons, and the great granddaughter of Francis Marion Plemmons Jr. This could be confusing, but read it one more time and it'll eventually come to you.

Known children of Francis Marion and Louisa Plemmons are:

1. John Lafayette Plemmons born Sept 2,1835 and died July O9, 1909. [John Lafayette is my Grandfather]

2 . James P. " Joe Doc" Plemmons, born c. 1838 and died a Civil War causality [place and time unknown] It was later thought that James may have fallen at Shiloh, Tenn. [1862-1863]

3. Rebecca Ann Plemmons born c. 1842, death c. 1895

4. Francis Marion Plemmons Jr., born 1849, died 1899.

The above children of Francis Marion Plemmons Sr. have the most uncertain background of my ancestors. To start, there is 14 years difference in their date of birth, not that would be impossible, but it would have been highly improbable. The rate of childbirth for those days, I would conclude, there were other children that are not listed. Children that were born and died early in life, from 1835 to 1849 is too long a period for only 4 children.

The men were all involved in the Civil War that spanned years 1861 to 1865. Grandfather, John Lafayette would have been 26 years old at the time. James P. [Joe Doc] 23 and Francis Marion Jr., were only 12. The age of Francis Jr., I questioned, but "Head Consultant, Janet Webb" attested that his age was documented and that it was a common occurrence for youth at the time to have been involved in that war. Later facts in this genealogy will bear out these figures.

A. John Lafayette Plemmons [my grandfather]/4/ Son of Francis Marion Sr/3/ Grandson of John Plemons Sr./2/ g. Grandson of Thomas Plemin Sr./I/ John Lafayette was born in Macon County, N.C. on Sept 02, 1835 and died July 09, 1909 in Falkville, Morgan Co., Ala. B. James P. "Joe Doc" Plemmons It was one time thought that possibly there was 2 separate people, but was later concluded they were one and the same. James was born c. 1838 in Macon Co, N.C. and his death date and place is unknown. He was a Civil War causality which would make his death between 1861 and 1865. His marriage on June 20, 1861 with Sarah E. McCutcheon is noted and his departure for war was shortly after his marriage. Sarah was the daughter of Josiah and Philadelphia Ryan McCutcheon, born 1802 and 1807. James P. never returned and his whereabouts were never known.

Sarah McCutcheon did conceive and a male child was born May 08, 1862. He was called J.D./Jimmy and birth named John David Louis Pierce Plemons. These names were from 5 of Sarah's brothers, according to Cora Nan Beatrice Holloway, a daughter of J.D's

Sarah McCutcheon Plemmons remarried on Nov. 16, 18 82 Henry William Sivley, Henry is the father of John William Sivley and the g. Grandfather of Louise Sivley Plemmons. Rebecca died c. 1895 at age 53 in Sweet Water and is buried in Hope Well Church Cemetery, Cullman County, Ala. Robert was born July 1833 in South Carolina and the 1900 census shows him living with brother-in-law, John Lafayette Plemmons at Falkville Ala. His death was shortly there after and was buried with Rebecca at Hope Well Cemetery at Cullman.

D. Francis Marion Plemmons Jr. /4/ Son of Francis Marion Plemmons Sr. /3/ Grandson of John Plemons /2/ g. Grandson of Thomas Plemin Sr./I/ Francis Marion Plemmons Jr. was born c. 1851 in Tennessee, probably at Sweet Water and died in 1899. He married /I/ April 11, 1870 in Morgan Co., Ala. Emaline McCain. Emaline died 8 years later in 1878 and he married /2/ Ellen T. Corley also in Morgan Co., Ala. c. 1883. The 1870 census count, Morgan Co. Ala shows Francis Marion Plemmons Jr. age 19 and Emaline age 17, living with Mother Louisa age 61.

Questions as to Francis Marion Jr. exact age is not assured and if the 1870 census count is correct, that would make 185 1 ? his birth year. His involvement in the Civil War starts when he enlisted in Thomas Legion of N.C., in Tennessee, Company C. on Oct 25, 1862. Using those dates, Francis Marion Jr. would have been only 10 years old at the time of his enlistment. He was known to have been very young at Civil War time, but as he had already lost Brother James P. [Joe Doc] and Brother John Lafayette with possible loss of a leg, his mental attitude could have caused reaction that may have been out of the ordinary. Possibly the dates were wrong or he lied about his age. Regardless of the exactness of those dates he was a Civil War Veteran and the records show him as a prisoner of war at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Ind., and also at Louisville Kentucky. His capture date was April 24, 1864 at Carter Station, Tenn. May 22, 1864 was his internment date at Camp Morton, Ind., where he was treated for scabies March 15, 1865. His discharge date was late in 1865 after the South had conceded.

Francis Marion Plemmons Jr. first marriage was 5 years after the war ended. He was 21 at the time in 1870 when he married Emaline McClain. Emaline lived only 8 years after marriage and in 1880 he married Ellen Tildon Corley. This was a second marriage for Ellen also. Francis died at age 50 in 1899 and is probably buried in Falkville City Cemetery

Children of Francis Marion and Emaline McClain Plemmons Jr. are:

a. John Jeams Plemmons b. Feb. 10, 1871 m. Emily Prisilla Fredrick.

b. Maggie Leliah Plemmons b. c. 1773 m. Feb. 21, 1891, Thomas B. Potter.

c. Darthula A. Plemmons b. Aug. 30, 1875 and died March 22, 1966. She married William C. Flowers in 189 1. Darthula is buried in Falkville City Cemetery. .

Children of Francis Marion and Ellen T. Corley Plemmons Jr. are:

d. Myrtle Plemmons b. July 1884 in Alabama m Conner Dunlap

e. Minnie Plemmons b. Sept 1885 m. Lawson Lawrence.

f. Jessie Plemmons b. Sept 1889 in Alabama m. Charles E. McAnalley.

The purpose of the above bit of genealogy is to show the three Francis Marion Plemmons' and how they fit together so as to make a union. This also shows how young some of the veterans of the Civil War were and what misery and suffering they endured. I personally feel most proud of their accomplishments and for those that may read what I've written, I hope they will also.
